eXperimental belief structures: unpredictable(?) results occur when accepting new beliefs/knowledge.
chaos is generally associated with all things unknowable, unpredictable, complex, and somehow other to that which we normally identify.also linked to ideas of 'source', it is (de)constructive at its very core and random in the sense of its sheer spontaneity. but to say that something is random implies it cannot be shifted/altered/manipulated.(ie. fate vs free will). i think many will agree that the mix and interaction between the two is what makes life the complex simplicity that it is (not).
on a personal level, chaos is what brings WILD illumination, abrupt change, fantastic synchronicities, and other memes that are outside of ones reasoning at the time. reason is something to be taken with a pinch of salt, for it can trick you into thinking the world is a mundane place. reality can be unfortunately categorised alongside problematic notions of economy, security and career. once you realise that you have been memetically programmed into chasing what 'should' be done and what is the 'correct' way of existing, then you have the freedom to construct your own ideals or methods for being/becoming. the fight is one against ones unwanted banality. ok, so a little bit of the banal is warranted here and there, but the crystal clear mind with thoughtforms colouring ones surroundings and providing theatrical experience sounds a lot more interesting to me.
chaos magick is a relatively recent development in the ancient magic(k)al tradition. first raising its feelers outward through the methods used by early twentieth century mage Austin Osman Spare, eyebrows really lifted in the seventies onwards. it could be termed a psycho-anarchistic mode of action, promoting very individualised ways of manifesting ones will.
it is a path that is not full of rigidity and moralistic inhibitions. it is colourful in that it celebrates all ideas and forms of knowledge as having their place somewhere in the universe at all times. sure, on first inspections,it can seem unethical, but anyone with any sense (or any sympathy) soon discovers there are little additions to an anarchistic system that make it run just that little bit smoother:(1) karma, or cause/effect, or do to others as you would have to yourself. (2)the belief that you ARE your environment (which in itself opens many doorways). these are good little hints to remember while meditating on the fact that anything is possible. it pushes you into thinking and acting for yourself, not for some outmoded system that modern education may fool you into accepting. but personally i do not identify with anything in particular, always shifting.. yet always the same.
knowledge does not have to be a collection of words and 'facts'. other forms of knowledge include: know-how (methods/techniques/ways), and experiential recognition (understanding through experience, linked to sympathy/empathy/memory).
there is a fairly nihilistic saying that is often ditched around websites on chaos magick: Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted. personally i think that this statement is a little lacking in flavour and only acts to scare people and turn them away from what seems so utterly careless in its approach. Yet, the potential freedom of behaviour is obvious. It invokes the idea "do what you want and do not think about the consequences". However, surely the consequences, or effects, are just as important as the actions or causes. maybe not? maybe these are the questions that arise when suspect statements are integrated by ones mind into an understandable reality.
Truth is a funny thing. it is illusory to believe in nothing, because to admit this is to contradict your own statement. "i believe in nothing" is ludicrous in that you have to believe you "believe nothing" for the statement to make sense. on the other hand if what you are trying to say is that you do not believe in any objective reality "out there", then that is another matter. belief is more on an instinctive level affecting your intention/attention, directly influencing ones behaviours/actions. it is easy to proclaim to have changed your beliefs, but it is another thing altogether for your whole being to switch modes of attention/behaviour/belief.
also, to believe in Nothingness, ie Nothingness is real, is a traditional spiritual realisation, and leads to notions of 'being nothing' and emptiness in the buddhist tradition. this also links in with 'being invisible' on a more practical level.
and, to have 'no belief system' is also an approach one can have. for me personally, i like to indulge in constructive imaginative speculation now and then, which for me can, if accompanied by experiments, planning and experience, help find meaning and substance in the world, if it so be desired.
anyway, chaos and its own form of magick form a meta-belief system. one of its main premises being: Beliefs Create Results. so in affect, ones beliefs and habits construct and set up ones reality. it is an approach to life that is open to the infinite beliefs that people have and the realities that are shared and that interact with one another.
it can be a very subjective form of existence. but, if one incorperates concepts like 'consensus reality' or objectivity, then one can share ones subjective magick with others by finding 'common ground' and utilising 'normal' human sensory facilities. an example of this would be experiencing an unusual dream, and then making an animation depicting events in the dream, and showing it to others. here, the subjective vision is converted to a format within the 'common sensory domain' of normal sight. this is sharing ones reality: the dream was real, but no-one saw it, so if anyones interested then follow your nose.
